PORTLAND, Ore. -- Construction crews are breaking ground on a new East Portland streetcar project Thursday morning.

The new Eastside Streetcar Loop project will run along the Martin Luther King Boulevard corridor and pass by OMSI.

The state and county estimate some 1,200 jobs will be created in the rail project’s construction.

Mayor Sam Adams was expected to break ground on the new project around 9 a.m.

It is expected to take two years to install the rail, according to engineers.

The project will result in future traffic rerouting and detours.
