Former Georgia-Pacific head Robert Pamplin Sr. dies at 97

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Robert B. Pamplin Sr., 97, the former chairman of timber giant Georgia-Pacific Corp., has died after a long illness.
His son, Robert B. Pamplin Jr., owner of the Pamplin Media Group, said his father died Wednesday morning and suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

Pamplin went to work as an accountant for Georgia-Pacific when he graduated from Virginia Tech University in 1934 and continued until his retirement in November 1976.
He later joined his son to form the R.B. Pamplin Corp.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Agnes Flanagan Chapel at Lewis & Clark College in Portland.
