Owens Corning drops plans for Gresham plant

GRESHAM -- Owens Corning says it has dropped plans for an insulation plant in Gresham. Environmentalists concerned about global warming celebrated Monday after the company announced it had withdrawn its request for a state air quality permit for the plant. Owens Corning faces a federal lawsuit by three environmental groups over hydrofluorocarbon gas involved with insulation production. Environmentalists say the plant would have produced more greenhouse gases than 100,000 cars. Owens Corning had built the shell of the plant more than a year ago while trying to get the state permit.
