Oregon microtunneling project could be longest in country
11:13 AM PDT on Thursday, April 24, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- It could be the longest microtunneling project in the country.
Engineers for a massive sewer construction project in Portland say their tunneling machine dug a tunnel 3,055 feet long for a connecting pipe.
Microtunneling uses a remote control boring machine along with a pipe jacking technique to install underground pipes as the tunnel is being drilled.
Called the East Side Big Pipe Project, the city is building a six-mile, 22-foot diameter tunnel to control sewage overflow into the Willamette River.
The long connecting tunnel has 7-foot wide pipe.
