Oregonians critical of Coast Range rail shutdown
01:41 PM PDT on Thursday, April 24, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon members of Congress and shippers say the owner of a closed railroad line has shirked its duties, and they want regulators to tighten regulation of railroad carriers.
Senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith, as well as Representative Peter DeFazio, testified before the federal Surface Transportation Board on Thursday in a hearing about carriers' obligations for the lines. A representative of shippers also spoke.

All strongly expressed the difficulty Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad and its parent company, RailAmerica, caused when they suddenly closed down a line that runs between the Eugene and Coos Bay.
RailAmerica representatives are expected to speak before the board Friday.
