Former bookkeeper steals from charity, goes to jail

HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A former bookkeeper who a judge called "one of the worst kind of thieves" for stealing from charity has been sentenced to 20 days in jail.
Michelle Lorraine Wheeler was also placed on probation for 18 months and told that she was "going to get hammered" with up to a year in jail if she violates it.
The 37-year-old Wheeler pleaded guilty to theft and identity theft involving her work with Safe Harbor and Hands to Heart International, two nonprofits in Hillsboro.
In one case, Wheeler forged a check to herself using $10,000 in grant money and used it to lease property near the Hillsboro Airport to run an illegal poker room.
