Fire destroys Clackamas business building
08:20 AM PDT on Monday, April 21, 2008
CLACKAMAS, Ore. -- Fire destroyed a Clackamas County chrome-plating business early Sunday.
Fire officials say crews couldn't use water to douse the flames because they feared the hazardous chemicals inside would wash into the sewer system. Water, however, was used to protect neighboring businesses.
There were no injuries, and a Clackamas County Fire District spokesman credited the company for having signs outside the building that alerted firefighters to the hazards inside.
Firefighters heard several explosions, which they think were caused by propane tanks.
Investigators are working with the business owner to determine the cause of the two-alarm fire.
