Think tank says gas use in NW is down
08:24 AM PDT on Friday, April 18, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- A new report finds residents in Oregon, Washington and Idaho have cut back on their per capita gas consumption by 11 percent from 1999 to 2007.
That's nearly a gallon a week on average.
The Northwest is outpacing the nation in gasoline reductions.
Ten years ago, people in the region consumed more gasoline per person than the national average. As of 2007, they consumed about 9 percent less than the national average.
Experts at the Sightline Institute, a nonprofit think-tank based in Seattle, say it's good news, but that the gasoline use in the region is still nearly twice as high as the global average for high-income nations.
