Portland city report recommends oil use reduction
07:20 AM PST on Friday, January 19, 2007
The city of Portland's peak oil task force released a draft report Friday on ways to reduce dependence on oil and natural gas.
The task force is accepting public comments until February 12th and expects to present a final report to the City Council in early March.
The report shows the economic and social problems that could result as fuel supplies decline.
The lead recommendation is to cut Portland's oil and natural gas use in half over the next 25 years.
The report also offers recommendations on ways to maintain the community stability as volatile energy markets cause emergency shortages and pose the threat of economic and social disruption.
