PORTLAND -- Haircuts, manicures, pedicures, massage... all of these things make a lot of us feel great. But they also drain the wallet.

KGW report on stretching your dollar

What if you could get those services at a fraction of the cost? You can if you know where to look.

In this installment of Stretching Your Dollar: all over town some serious savings on spa treatments await.

"It's a hidden secret that's starting to come around and people are finding out about it," says Mytien Kent with the Portland Beauty School.

Did you know you can get almost anything you can get at a spa at half the cost-- or even less-- much less-- by taking advantage of beauty schools?

Yes, beauty schools! Try manicures for $8. Haircuts for $4.

"8 dollar spa facials, 12 dollar spa pedicures, so it's really inexpensive," says Mytien.

And thorough, she says, "They're getting graded so they're taking their time."

Mytien says you should know that by the time her students are ready to work on you they are prepared and under the guidance of someone experienced.

"It's under the direct supervision of an instructor so the instructor is right there to watch them. They are making sure every little thing is perfect."

Another option for you if you're looking to stretch those dollars spa style!

And the same goes for the massage schools we checked with. An hour cost as little as $30 dollars, but spots fill up fast so call the schools to find out if and when they take appointments.
