Where would we be if we didn't have our cell phones?

KGW report on stretching your dollar

"I have two; one for work one for personal," said one cell phone user. "I'm on it all the time.. either talking or texting," said another.

More high tech than ever, as the phones evolve, so do the monthly bills.

"I have a family plan for two kids and two adults. It's probably over two hundred dollars a month," said one woman.

"For the convenience of having it, being able to communicate with my family and friends.. it is not that big of a cost to me at least," noted a man.

Fair enough, but did you know that if you strip away all the extra services most phone companies now offer, the basic plan for one phone actually hasn't changed much in the past 10 years, averaging about 50 to 60 bucks a month.

Your finance friends at kiplinger.com compiled a few suggestions to save a few bucks.

First, if you're not a chatty cathy consider getting a prepaid or pay-as-you-go plan. You'll have to do the math but kiplinger.com figures people who talk three hours or less a month on their phones should see a savings.

For those of us with the gift of gab consider amazon.com. You can find phones and plans with steep discounts and rebates. But read the fine print because in some cases the bargains are only for new customers.

If you like your current provider, try insisting it match the deals on amazon.

For most of us, it's hard to imagine life without a cell phone.

"It would be hard to get through the day."

"It's worth it.. you can keep track of everybody."

But do take a look at your plan to see if there are savings in store for you.
