Now they're stepping up the incentives even more.

Fred Meyer and Safeway are leading the way to offer gas discounts.

At Fred Meyer fueling stations, anyone with a rewards cards get a 3 cent a gallon savings.

“It's always been very popular, but it's probably getting a little more attention in the last six months or so,” said Melinda Merrill, a Fred Meyer spokeswoman.

A ten cent a gallon discount kicks in on $100 worth of in store purchases.

And with the Fred Meyer master card, you'll save even more. --15 cents a gallon.

If you're a Safeway shopper, a new program just introduced can save you more the more you spend in the grocery aisle.

You earn 10 cents off per gallon on your next fill up for every $100 you spend in the store.

If you use the Fred Meyer program, your rewards must be used within 30 days. As for the Safeway power pump rewards program, you have until the end of each quarter to redeem your points.
