Vancouver inventor creates prototype for 'air car'
07:52 AM PDT on Thursday, June 12, 2008
As gas prices continue to climb almost on a daily basis, the cry is "Why doesn't someone do something about it?"
Now, a Vancouver inventor is trying. Jim Milner's come up with an electric car and an air car that will save time and money. Milner's inspiration is the Wright Brothers.
That famous photo of the Wright Brothers take off at Kittyhawk hangs in his small workshop.
After retirement from his job as a commercial pilot, Milner had time and ideas on his side. His first thought was to re-invent the aircar.
"It's designed to show how we have solved the problems that are inherent in building a flying car" said Milner.
The design looks like something directly out the old cartoon The Jetsons. In road-mode the wings are folded above the rear portion of the car. When unfolded, the wingspan stretches twenty-eight feet.
"A flying car that travels 200 mph for up to a thousand miles" said Milner proudly.
But, it's more down to earth travel where Milner expects to drive home the point of energy savings with this electric car.
It will cost just 90 cents to operate for two hours. That's less than a tenth the cost of gas and no carbon footprint.
"This is a four door vehicle, four seats, plus it has storage in the back for your stuff" said Milner.
The prototypes are just that. There are changes already in the works. Larger doors and more headroom to start.
There are no side mirrors. Three video cameras will provide an outside view on the front console that resembles a cockpit.
With a six figure investment for the electric and aircar, Milner is anxious to bring both to market. The electric car will be out first in kit form within a year.
"I think the electric car will sell somewhere between twenty and thirty thousand" says Milner.
The aircar will take off about two years from now and cost a half million dollars.
"I think i'm doing something that has the possibility of changing the world. I'm having fun and life doesn't get much better than that" according to Milner.
