PORTLAND, Ore. -- Leaves are starting to drop and with the latest forecast predicting a big rain and wind storm arriving in Portland later this week, residents can do their part to help avoid flooding in the streets.

The city’s Leaf Day Pickup program is not scheduled to start for another month, which means it’s more important than ever for Portland residents to clear away leaves from curbs and storm drains in advance of the big storm.

“During a storm, it’s a good idea to check … and make sure water is flowing into that storm drain clear,” said Portland Bureau of Transportation spokesperson Dylan Rivera.

Rivera said leaves, branches and litter, among other things, can block a storm drain and cause a street to flood.

“So we need everyone’s help,” he said.
