Winter is here, at least it up at the mountain!

On the drive up to Mount Hood, the road was covered in snow. On Friday, while chairlifts were not running, die hard skiers hiked for a shot at some good snow.

“Skiing early season turns gotta get it in,” said skier Torie Lindskog.

If you're not big of hiking for your turns, Meadows will begin running lifts this Saturday and Sunday for its Preview Weekend.

Dave Tragethon, the vice president of sales, marketing and communications for Mount Hood Meadows, said this same weekend last year there wasn't enough snow to start operating the lifts. But this year, it's a different story. A foot of snow fell in 12 hours overnight.

“It has been Snow-vember. We've had 63 inches of snow so far and a forecast that says it's going to continue for the rest of the month,” said Tragethon.

That is good news for snow lover who were on the mountain ahead of Meadows’ Preview Weekend.

“It's awesome. It's good to have this much snow in November and the snow pack is building. Just looking forward to another good season. Last winter was so awesome and I think by the looks of it, this season will be awesome as well,” said Fred Norquist, who was out hiking and skiing.

Tragethon said the good snow last year has built up anticipation for this season and pass sales this year are up about 10 percent.

“Last year was just a great snow year. Then the La Nina forecast came out for this year and people got excited about this season,” he said.

The excitement is now reaching a peak. And if all the snow that’s already fallen is any indication, the hype is spot on.

Timberline is already open. Summit will be opening a chairlift on Saturday. Regular operations for Meadows will begin the day after Thanksgiving.

Mount Bachelor is also planning to open tomorrow.

There is also a lot of excitement at Meadows this season, since it’s the ski area’s 50th anniversary.

There are 50 golden tickets floating around. There will be chances to win one this weekend by winning a dance contest at Meadows’ Pray for Snow Party on Saturday. There will also be another chance to win one in a scavenger hunt. People will have various opportunities to win them through January. Having one means the possibility of winning a 50-year season pass to Meadows.
