PORTLAND -- A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for several counties in Oregon and Washington, the National Weather Service announced.

A severe thunderstorm warning in effect earlier in the afternoon was downgraded just before 2 p.m.

"The storm which prompted the warning has weakened below severe limits and no longer poses and immediate threat to life or property," the NWS statement reads.

Small hail, gusty winds and heavy rain were still possible for the duration of the thunderstorm watch in the following Oregon counties:

  • Clackamas
  • Gilliam
  • Hood river
  • Morrow
  • Multnomah
  • Sherman
  • Umatilla
  • Union
  • Wallowa
  • Wasco

The watch was also in effect for the following Washington counties:

  • Adams
  • Asotin
  • Benton
  • Clark
  • Columbia
  • Cowlitz
  • Franklin
  • Garfield
  • Grant
  • Kittitas
  • Klickitat
  • Lincoln
  • Skamania
  • Walla walla
  • Whitman
  • Yakima
