PORTLAND, Ore. – Mayor-elect Ted Wheeler on Tuesday vowed to keep Portland a sanctuary city.

The statement comes in response to a campaign promise made by President-elect Donald Trump, who threatened to eliminate federal funds for cities that continue to protect undocumented immigrants.

Wheeler said Portland’s status as a sanctuary city is non-negotiable.

“Our values here in Portland, Oregon may be different than the values in other places. So, I think there’s a learning process here and an opportunity for us to communicate and educate,” he said.

Wheeler added that he will wait and see what Trump’s policies look like and whether it will include cutting off federal funds for sanctuary cities.
