PORTLAND, Ore. -- Over the weekend, somebody spray-painted the word "ISIS" on the Abu-Bakar Islamic Center in Northeast Portland.
Now, a Muslim advocacy group is calling on state and federal leaders to take action.
Seemab Hussaini, a spokesperson for the Oregon chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the vandalism should be investigated as a hate crime.
Many of the people who go to the mosque are actually refugees who fled ISIS terrorists, he said.
CAIR says 2017 is on track to be one of the worst years for anti-Muslim hate crimes, adding that the first half of the year saw 24 percent more than the same time period last year.
