Woman dies after trying to rescue cat from Hillsboro house fire

Firefighters were dispatched about 5 a.m. to the home near Minter Bridge Road and Tualatin Valley Highway.

HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A woman died and a man was able to escape a house fire Monday morning in Hillsboro.

Police said the woman, 55-year-old Cynthia Ann Stephens, was on her way out of the house with her husband when she went back in to rescue her cat.

She didn't make it back out. The cat was found dead in the house.

Firefighters were dispatched about 5 a.m. to the home in the 1900 block of Southeast Minter Bridge Road, near the Tualatin Valley Highway, according to the Hillsboro Fire Department.

The cause of the fire was electrical, according to police.

The Stephens' dog was found safe at a neighbor's home.
