MCMINNVILLE, Ore. -- Two people died in a head-on crash on Highway 18 east of McMinnville on Saturday afternoon.

The crash occurred when 59-year-old William Stockinger of Tualatin, driving a Dodge Caravan, crossed over the center line while traveling west on Highway 18 near milepost 49. Marc Sloan, 54, of Bellevue, Washington, was driving the opposite direction in a Chevy Impala. He tried to avoid the Caravan, but the two vehicles crashed into each other.

The Impala flipped over a guardrail and down an embankment. Sloan was pronounced dead at the scene. Stockinger was taken by ambulance to a Portland hospital and is being treated for serious injuries.

The passenger in the Caravan, 65-year-old Linda Louise Stockinger of Tualatin, was taken by air ambulance to a Portland hospital with critical injuries. She later died at the hospital.

Sloan and Williams Stockinger were wearing seatbelts. Linda Stockinger was not.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.

Highway 18 was closed for about six hours and reopened around 9 p.m.
