PORTLAND, Ore. -- Two pedestrians were struck at about 4:50 a.m. Friday on Northeast Columbia Boulevard, both suffering critical injuries, according to Portland police.

Preliminary findings indicate the two were in a westbound lane of Columbia when they were hit by a semi truck.

Just after they were struck, the driver of a car trying to avoid the scene hit a fire hydrant. The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The semi driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Columbia Boulevard was closed for several hours.
