Thief steals family vehicle from NICU parking lot

A Scappoose family is heartbroken, after they say someone stole their car from the Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center NICU parking lot.

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – A Scappoose family is heartbroken after they say someone stole their car from the Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center NICU parking lot.

The family believes the theft happened on the night of April 11.

Emily Smith says her baby Elly May was born prematurely. She’s been in the NICU for about three weeks. The family parked the car on Wednesday, April 11. The following morning, Elly May's father, Andrew Weyeneth, went outside and the car was gone.

“It was really a lot of craziness to go on,” he said. “We are just trying to take care of our baby and then our car is gone. I just broke down.”

“All of our kids’ memories, everything, are in that vehicle. Its been a hard one to swallow. Its not the average vehicle, it’s a loved one who passed away, passed it down to me, so it has a lot of meaning,” said Smith. “It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that anyone would target a vehicle in the NICU parking lot.”

The vehicle is a 2001 dark green Chevy Tracker, with a “baby on board” sticker on the back. Smith says it's also missing a side panel.

The family is asking that the thief simply call in an anonymous tip, to tell them where the vehicle is located. They just want their car back.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

In the meantime, family members have set up a GoFundMe account.
