PORTLAND, Ore. – The warnings are over for drivers who speed on Northeast Marine Drive.

Starting Thursday, drivers caught speeding on the busy road will receive tickets in the mail.

The speed cameras have been capturing photos of speeding drivers and sending them to Portland police for review since Feb. 20. Over the last month, drivers caught in the act received warning letters.

Marine Drive is one of 30 roads designated as a high-crash corridor by the city. The roads account for nearly 60 percent of the fatal crashes in Portland.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation says since the Marine Drive speed cameras were activated in February, data during the warning period showed a 70-percent decrease in the number of drivers who traveled over the speed limits, and a 95-percent decrease in the number of drivers who traveled 10 mph over the speed limits.

An average of 1,480 drivers per day went over the speed limit by 10 mph or more before the cameras were installed. After the cameras were installed, that number dropped to 80 drivers per day, PBOT said.

The cameras are in two locations on Northeast Marine Drive: westbound near 138th Avenue and eastbound near 33rd Avenue.
