Small businesses get big help from grants

Some small businesses in Portland are finding relief after being awarded grant money from the city.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Some Portland businesses found out they received a grant that will help stay open for now.

One of those businesses is Amalfi’s in Northeast Portland. They’ve been a fixture along Northeast Fremont St. for six decades. Like any business, they’ve seen their ups and downs, but nothing like they’re facing right now. Kiauna Floyd is a third-generation family member at  Amalfi’s and she says this has been a long couple of weeks.

Tuesday though, was a good day.

That’s when she found she was one of more than two hundred businesses that received a small business grant that was created by the Portland City Council and Prosper Portland, the city’s economic development plan. Together they were able to raise $2,000,000.

One million will be going toward the grants with another going toward no-interest loans that businesses can start applying for on Wednesday.

Floyd says she’ll be able to be back with her family again. “We don’t call them employees, we call them family -- that is sitting at home and eager to come to work.”

Businesses who received the grant will find out later this week just how much they’ll be receiving.
