THE DALLES, Ore. – A massive rockslide closed the Historic Columbia River Highway east of the Rowena Crest Viewpoint in the Columbia River Gorge.
Large rocks tumbled from a wall next to the highway and piled up on the road Sunday night around 7:30 p.m., according to Peter Murphy with the Oregon Department of Transportation.
No one was hurt.
The rocks blocked about 200 feet of highway, Murphy said, and some boulders were so large that ODOT will need special equipment to remove them.
Geologists plan to examine the area to make sure no more rockslides are imminent and crews will be safe while they clear the highway.
The road is closed to all vehicles and could be blocked for several weeks, Murphy said.
