Soldier dies in shooting at Oregon's Camp Rilea

The Clatsop County Sheriff's Office says members of a U.S. Army unit reported that the shot was fired Wednesday night in the housing area at Camp Rilea.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Authorities say a soldier died in a shooting at a training facility near the Oregon coast.

The Clatsop County Sheriff's Office says members of a U.S. Army unit reported that the shot was fired Wednesday night at about 6:30 p.m. in the housing area at Camp Rilea. The sheriff's office described the shooting as accidental.

The soldier died in the emergency room at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria.

The soldier's name has not been released.

According to Maj. Stephen Bomar, the shooting happened after training hours. He says loaded guns aren’t allowed in the housing area at Camp Rilea.

"Yesterday they were out practicing. You hear them shooting. But yeah, it’s rare. You don’t see something like that happen every day,” said Wayne Jarvis, who lives in the area. "Our sympathies go out to the families."

Camp Rilea, based in Warrenton, is the primary training facility for the Oregon National Guard.
