WOODBURN, Ore. -- A Marion County Sheriff's Office deputy was injured Friday after he was struck by a vehicle during an attempted stop.
The deputy, Sgt. Jason Hickam, fired a shot at the suspect after he was hit by the car, according to Lt. Chris Baldridge of the sheriff's office. The suspect, 35-year-old Juan Francisco Martinez, was not hit by the bullet.
At 12:16 p.m., Hickam pulled over Martinez on Boones Ferry Road NE near Highway 99E. A confrontation ensued and Hickam was injured as Martinez drove away, Baldrdige said. That's when Hickam fired a shot at Martinez's car.
Hickam, a 15-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. He was released later in the day.
Hickam has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard protocol when a deputy uses gunfire.
Martinez was arrested at 4:35 p.m. by Salem police. He was lodged at the Marion County Jail.
