PORTLAND, Ore. – A man was arrested following a standoff that closed a 10-block stretch of Northeast Portland Highway Wednesday afternoon.

John J. Barry, 27, was lodged at the Multnomah County Jail on a warrant for failure to appear regarding a previous DUII charge.

At around 1:15 p.m., a neighbor called 911 and reported hearing a woman scream, followed by a gunshot and more screaming in the 4500 block of Northeast Portland Highway, according to Portland police.

Officers asked residents of one home to evacuate and go to a nearby home. Residents at other homes in the area were told to shelter in place.

Northeast Portland Highway was closed between 42nd Avenue and 52nd Avenue. Police also closed Northeast Holman Street from 45th Avenue to 52nd Avenue.

Police called their Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and crisis negotiators to the scene.

About two hours later, the suspect, later identified as Barry, surrendered himself.

No one in the home was harmed.

Officers found a replica firearm in the house after Barry was brought into custody. Police said a woman believed to be involved in the disturbance was not cooperative during the investigation.
