Warming shelters remain open Tuesday night in Portland area

Warming centers will open in Multnomah County as temperatures are expected drop below freezing.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Warming centers will remain open Tuesday night in Multnomah County as the city is expected to get up to 7 inches of snow.

The county said it will open an additional warming center Tuesday night at the Department of Community Justice building at 1415 SE 122nd Avenue in Portland. More sites could open as conditions change.

Transition Projects will have shelters at the following locations:

  • Bud Clark Commons at 655 NW Hoyt in Portland. Shelter open to adults from 8:30 p.m. Monday until 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
  • Imagio DEI at 1302 SE Ankeny in Portland. Shelter open to adults from 8:30 p.m. Monday until 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
  • Sunrise Center at 18901 East Burnside in Gresham. Shelter open to adults, couples and pets from 9 p.m. Monday to 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Portland Homeless Families Solutions has spaces available for families, by reservation, at Congregation Beth Israel.

211info will coordinate transport for anyone who needs shelter but does not have a way to get there.

Advocates believed many of Portland's estimated 1,700 people living on the street would chose to stay outside in the cold instead of in a shelter for reasons ranging from fear of crowds, to the belief that they wouldn’t be allowed inside.

“Everyone is welcome to come inside, you can bring your dog, your pet, your cart, whatever it takes,” said George Devendorf, Executive Director of Transition Projects. “We want you to come inside and be warm and be safe.”

Multnomah County shelters are seeking volunteers and donations. You can find more information here.

In Salem, The First Congregational Church, at 700 Marion St. NE, will be open from 8 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. It will be open through at least Thursday. If weather conditions persist, operations will be extended.
