YACHATS, Ore. – A buoy used to detect tsunami waves washed ashore on the Oregon Coast in Yachats on the same day a tsunami watch was issued for the West Coast.
The National Weather Service said it was only a coincidence. The buoy was likely anchored 230 miles west of Astoria and traveled for at least 93 days before washing up on the beach, the NWS said.
The DART Buoy broke from its mooring on Oct. 4.

The NWS said the buoy’s appearance was not related to the earthquake that struck 174 miles off Kodiak, Alaska, and triggered a tsunami watch for coastal areas from Northern Washington to Southern California. The watch was later canceled.
