A pit bull was shot and killed after attempting to attack a man walking his dog in Keizer Saturday afternoon, according to police.

The man was walking his dog on the 6100 block of River Road North when a pit bull appeared from a wooded area and lunged at the man in an aggressive manner, said Keizer Police Deputy Chief Jeffrey Kuhns.

The man pulled out a gun and shot the pit bull. The dog's body remained on the road for a short time until police cleared it.

It is unclear how many bullets were fired at the dog. The breed of the dog walker's dog is unknown. Keizer police is investigating.

Kuhns said there have been no charges filed at this time.
