PORTLAND, Ore. – Dress for Success Oregon is putting the spotlight on women who have served in the armed forces.
An event Thursday will honor the veterans by offering them free professional clothing, shoes, accessories, and job connections.
Phylicia Jackson-Lockett is one of the organizers with Dress for Success Oregon.
She says female veterans often don’t refer to themselves as veterans, and when they attend veteran events, those are often geared toward men. The Dress for Success event honors those women.
She said her sister is a veteran and it was challenging for her to find a job after she served. Jackson-Lockett said she knows many other veterans facing the same challenges, which is why the “We See You” event offers women a chance to make job connections.
“You wear the outfit that you want the job for, and so, we tell women all the time, ‘You don’t have to get a suit," Jackson-Lockett said. "But we want to instill confidence in them, to let them know: 'You come here, we are going to help you. We are going to motivate you, and we are going to be here to support you.'
“We wanted the women to know we see them. They are not invisible to us. We want to pamper them. We have resources. People coming who are maybe going to hire some vets from this event. We are just excited that people are just responding to us and want to help women veterans.”
This is the second year Dress for Success Oregon has hosted an event for women veterans.
