Dozens of trees on Lake Oswego property cut down without explanation

"You don't do something like that," said property owner Luis Pacheco. "It's shocking."

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- Detectives with the Lake Oswego Police Department are trying to figure out who cut down dozens of trees on a family's private land.

“You don’t do something like that,” said property owner Luis Pacheco. “It’s shocking.”

The Pacheco family bought the land in the Skyland neighborhood on the southern edge of the city as an investment in 1981. The Pachecos do not live on the property, but they check it often.

During a check in mid-February they noticed that more than 30 trees had been cut down without their permission.

“They were stacked on each other so badly we could only count a couple of them at the time,” said Pacheco. “It ends up being 35 total.”

A lot of the toppled trees are decades old. Others were planted by the Pacheco family.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Pacheco. “You know you get angry. Then it’s just shock and sadness.”

Pacheco is confident the police investigation will lead to criminal charges and hefty fines, but he wants even more.

“I think ultimately it would be nice to have the culprit remove the trees and we can mitigate and replant the area, because that’s how it should be.”

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the Lake Oswego Police Department.
