SALEM, Ore. -- A wanted man was shot by police in Salem Thursday afternoon.

Zackary Miles Pevey, 40, was driving near the intersection of Silverton Road Northeast and Hawthorne Street Northeast shortly before 3:30 p.m. when officers attempted to pull him over regarding a warrant, according to Lt. Dave Okada with Salem police.

Pevey fled from officers, at one point crashing into a patrol car, Okada said. Officers stopped their pursuit for safety reasons.

Other officers spotted Pevey driving southbound on Cordon Road Northeast and attempted to contact him in a driveway in the 5500 block of State Street. That's when Pevey refused to comply with officers' commands and put his truck into reverse, crashing into Officer Jesse Rios' patrol vehicle, Okada said. Rios then fired his handgun at Pevey, hitting him.

Pevey was taken to Salem Hospital. Okada did not say how serious Pevey's injuries were.

Officer Rios was not hurt during the confrontation. He was placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol.

Oregon State Police and the Marion County District Attorney's Office will investigate the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call OSP at 503-375-3555.
