PORTLAND, Ore. – A man was shot in the Old Town neighborhood of Portland early Saturday morning.

Portland police officers on patrol heard gunshots fired in the area of Northwest 4th Avenue and Couch Street shortly before 1:30 a.m.

Witnesses confirmed there was a shooting and gave officers a description of the suspect and his last known location, according to Sgt. Chris Burley of Portland police.

The suspect’s description was broadcast to other responding officers, who located a man matching the description in the area of Southwest 4th Avenue and Ankeny Street. The man, 24-year-old Alejandro Vance, was taken into custody.

Officers seized evidence of gunfire at the shooting scene and found a firearm about a block away from where Vance was arrested, Burley said.

Shortly after the shooting, a man arrived at a hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. His injuries were serious but not life-threatening, Burley said. Based on information received at the hospital, officers believe he is the victim of the shooting.

Officers were told the man was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle. A car matching the description was found in a parking lot near the hospital and had multiple bullet strikes, Burley said. Investigators believe the man was shot while he was in the vehicle.

Vance was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of attempted aggravated murder, assault, unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a weapon, and a post-prison violation for a previous conviction of attempted assault.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Portland Police Gang Enforcement Team at 503-823-4106.
