PORTLAND, Ore. -- A family wellness center in Northeast Portland is trying to recover after a burglar stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

Amy Watson and others at The SweetLight Center are passionate about their care.

“We named it the SweetLight Center. That comes from a quote that says ,'May the long time sun shine upon you, all love surround you, and the sweet light within you guide your way on,'” Watson said.

The SweetLight Center helps and support families through pregnancy, birth, early parenting and beyond, as well as people at every stage of life who want to achieve optimal health.

The business is devastated, after last Wednesday, they learned a burglar slipped in through a window overnight. He stole computers and iPads, and even used a suitcase in the building to stuff equipment inside. Then he slipped out the window.

The business alarm system failed to alert anyone, until the moment he left. That’s after he was inside the building for almost an hour. By the time police got here, he was gone.

“I hadn't gotten the computers fully ensured,” said Watson. “I hadn't had everything backed up just right.”

Watson verified all patient information is safe and secure, but realized it's going to take a lot of time and money to get back to normal.

“We're in trouble. We need help,” she said.

The business started a GoFundMe page to raise money.

The support, Watson says, has been overwhelming. “It was clients, patients, people who wrote comments about how our care has meant to them,” she said. “Just holding the babies and seeing the kids, I remember why I do it. And, it really kind of restored my faith.”

The SweetLight Center says they are replacing their security system with a brand-new system, and using a different company. The burglar is still on the loose. Anyone with information is asked to contact Portland Police.
