'Brace, brace, brace!': United flight makes hard landing at PDX

Flight 1551 from Newark Liberty International Airport blew a tire on its front landing gear during takeoff, a United spokesperson said.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A United Airlines flight from Newark landed safely Sunday night at Portland International Airport without one of its front tires.

Flight 1551 from Newark Liberty International Airport blew a tire on its front landing gear during takeoff, a United spokesperson said.

The plane touched down at about 10:30 p.m., and 122 passengers and 6 crew members got off the plane with normal procedures.

No injuries were reported.

Passenger Fraser Wright said the landing was “quite bumpy” after the front landing gear touched ground. “I think after we came to a stop, we all felt very comfortable,” he said.

Kyle Hobbs told KGW 'the whole plane rattled' after takeoff at Newark. An announcement was made that there was an issue with front end of the plane. About 90 minutes before landing, the cabin crew moved around some passengers and luggage.

Passengers were given instructions on how to position the body before landing. A man next to him who was a pilot showed Hobbs where to put his hands to avoid breaking the thumbs.

As the plane approached the PDX runway, the crew sounded the warning to "brace, brace, brace!" Hobbs said.

There was "a little rattle" but otherwise, the plane landed without incident. He said "the crew was great."

The plane was towed to a gate after coming to a stop.

Emergency responders stood by to assist, but for the most part they were not needed.

Kyle Hobbs described the flight and landing to KGW's Taylor Viydo. Watch here.
