Apple, Square and other tech companies are hiring by the hundreds in Portland

Dozens of Portland businesses continue to hire as 2020 kicks into gear.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The double-dose of news regarding Portland tech — Apple will occupy a part of a prominent new Eastside tower while Square is preparing to enter downtown — this week could be a good harbinger for the sector in coming months.

A survey of local tech companies that are hiring, by the Portland jobs board Mac's List, indicates that dozens of businesses continue to hire as 2020 kicks into gear.

"We're seeing an increase in tech hiring in the region and more and more tech jobs on Mac's List recently," reported Mac Prichard, the company's president. "One reason for more tech postings on our site: Employers tell us they want to find candidates who have non-tech backgrounds, such as in marketing and design, who make up a big part of our readership."

The tech sector remains bustling as Oregon's overall unemployment rates remains steady, at 4.1 percent for the month of December. In Portland, the rate was 3.6 percent, the lowest on comparable records dating back to 1990.

Specifically, employers added 2,900 jobs in December, building on a gain of 1,400 jobs in November, according to Oregon's Employment Department.
