PORTLAND, Ore. – Someone broke into and damaged food carts at Portland Mercado on Sunday.

Eight of the market’s 10 food carts were damaged, and six were burglarized, according to the market’s website.

"It hurts us in more ways than you can imagine," said Fernando Rodriguez, who owns Fernando's Alegria.

The total damage was estimated at $25,000.

“While we are frustrated at this time, we are not giving up and we are confident that this will only make us stronger and more resilient,” said a post on the market’s website.

The market set up a donation page, and encouraged people to support its businesses by buying food. The market is also having a party over Dia de Los Muertos weekend from Oct. 28-30, and will accept donations there.

"It's a big loss and we lost sales too because everyone thinks we're closed, but we're not closed, we have business in here," said business owner Eric Caravantes.

Portland Mercado is a Latin market located at 7238 SE Foster Rd.

"I just feel like it's not fair. We're just trying to support our families. We're a small business," Rodriguez said.
