If the Jupiter Hotel is the original Portland hipster hotel, with a bit of a rowdy, late-night feel to it, then think of the forthcoming Jupiter NEXT across the street as its somewhat calmer, more reserved older sibling.

SLIDESHOW: Inside Jupiter NEXT

"I see it as the evolution of our customer," said Al Munguia, general manager of the hotels. "With Jupiter NEXT, you still have the true model of what we are, this funky, hip hotel with a fun live music venue. But now, I sort of want to get to bed at a little bit more reasonable hour. I want the comforts. I'll still have access to everything and be able to enjoy the party, but I'll also be able to retire out of it when I need to."

Located just across from the Jupiter Hotel and the Doug Fir Lounge at 800 E. Burnside St., the new six-story, 67-room hotel is entering the home stretch toward an early June opening. It's been under construction since late 2016.

Designed by Portland's Work Progress Architecture and co-owned by the Jupiter's founders Kelsey Bunker and Tod Breslau, Jupiter NEXT brings a unique design to an area of close-in Portland that's humming with new activity. Its rooms offer up views of downtown and the far-off foothills — plus a Cascade peak or two — and its event space and community spaces are designed to invite folks in for both work and pleasure.

"Kelsey really had a definitive vision in mind," Munguia said. "She really wanted to make a statement with the building, something that in the future could be seen as an iconic Portland building."

On the ground floor, a bar and restaurant called Hey Love will open sometime after the hotel opens its doors. It comes from Emily Mistell of Rum Club, Sophie Thomson, formerly of Mississippi Studios, and Dig a Pony co-owners Aaron Halland Nick Musso.

An opening party for the owners is set for Friday, June 1. The hotel will likely open for business sometime the week after that.
