Cash infusion grant could help struggling Portland businesses

April was supposed to be a big month for Aaron Allina with Memoz Dessert Café, but instead he's let six employees go.

PORTLAND, Ore — Small businesses could soon be getting a cash infusion, thanks to a two million dollar business relief fund started by Prosper Portland and the city of Portland.

One small business owner already applied for the grant, and he’s looking to fill the gap he’s been missing with his customers.

April was supposed to be a big month for Aaron Allina with Memoz Dessert Café. Allina was supposed to be celebrating his one-year anniversary since opening up in North Portland. Within the last month he’s had to let six employees go, leaving him with three total.

Many Portland businesses like his could soon be getting some help.

Allina applied for the Portland Small Business Relief Fund, which will provide grant and zero-interest loans to business owners who have seen a dramatic drop in business due to the coronavirus.

“We’re kind of waiting and seeing we filled out the application yesterday… I read somewhere where 200 businesses are going to get grants,” said Allina.

Applications are being accepted right now, and businesses will find out by April 7 if they are qualified for any grants.
