CHICAGO, Ill. - KGW News has been recognized for its digital innovation by the Local Media Association, an industry group that represents more than 3,000 different media and digital entities.
The KGW Media Group received a first-place award in the large media category (over 750,000 monthly unique users) for Best New Digital Initiative. Specifically, the station's website, KGW.com, was honored for its use of live-streaming web technology over the past year.
Second place in the category went to the McClatchy Corporation and its Sacramento Bee newspaper for its use of 360-degree video.
The live web stream on the KGW News app, KGW.com and KGW's Facebook page covers everything from local breaking news and weather to national events of interest. It routinely attracts millions of viewers and has drawn in audience members from around the world.
The contest was judged by the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin/Engaging News Project, which included entries from more than 80 different companies.
The Local Media Association honored the station at its 2017 Digital Revenue Summit, which was held in Chicago on May 9-10 and featured presentations from the award winners.
“This is a highly competitive contest that recognizes the best of local media when it comes to digital innovation,” said Nancy Lane, president of the Local Media Association. “There is no other contest like it. The bragging rights are huge for the winners.”
