Possible shark attack not scaring Oregon coast surfers
03:51 PM PDT on Monday, September 17, 2007
A shark that likely attacked an 800-pound sea lion off the Oregon coast is not keeping surfers out of the water.
The injured sea lion washed up Saturday at Fort Stevens State Park near Astoria. It remained beached Sunday, but by late Monday morning, it was no longer resting on the beach and experts speculated it had either ventured back into the water or moved to another shoreline location.
The sea lion’s right flipper had been bitten off -- a non-life-threatening injury, but one that could have only been caused by a shark or an orca, according to experts.
"We're pretty sure it was a shark, because if it was an orca, the orca would have finished the job," said Keith Chandler, a member of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, an organization that responds to animals found on the Oregon coast.
“The shark probably isn’t still hanging around out there waiting for someone to come in,” Chandler said.
Chandler, who is also the general manager of the Seaside Aquarium, said shark attacks off the coast are rare and should not keep people from going in the water.
“I’d be more afraid of hypothermia than anything else,” said Chandler.
Surfers said their sport has gained in popularity in Oregon, and a possible shark attack is not going to scare many surfers away.
“I think getting caught in the tide is a little more scarier,” said Portland surfer Kat Seaman.
Surfers at Indian Beach at Ecola State Park consider running into other surfers their biggest concern.
“I try not to think about them [sharks],” said Jessie Haungs, “If I do, I’d probably come back in.”
Chandler and others searched the shoreline late Monday morning to try and figure out where the sea lion had relocated and if it was still alive.
"The surfer was getting ready to go into the surf when he saw the sea lion come flying out of the water," said Chandler. "He watched it come onto the beach and it was bleeding all over the place."
