Chimp attacks worker at Bend animal sanctuary

06:13 PM PDT on Friday, August 8, 2008

By DAVID KROUGH, kgw.com Staff

BEND, Ore. --- Emergency crews were called to an animal shelter in Bend after a chimpanzee attacked a worker there Friday.

Deschutes County officials said a caregiver had left a cage unlocked at the Chimps Inc facility Friday morning, that’s when a 19-year-old female chimp escaped and bit intern Kristen Howard.

She was treated on the scene for minor injuries.

Chimps Inc. is a wildlife sanctuary that holds eight chimps and two big cats.

The offending chimp was taken back to her cage.

Officials said the chimp had no history of violence.
