PORTLAND -- Fourteen Chihuahuas that were among the 150 rescued mid-April by Washington County authorities became available for adoption Wednesday at the Oregon Humane Society.

The dogs were released to OHS for adoption by the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter in Hillsboro.

There are five females and nine males ranging in age from 2 1/2 years to 13 years. OHS assisted the Hillsboro shelter earlier this month when it performed numerous surgeries on the dogs for a variety of medical conditions, as well as spaying and neutering the animals.

Adoption fees range from $200 - $300, and include spay/neuter operation, microchip, first vaccinations, collar and identification tag. The adoption procedure for these dogs is similar to the procedure for adopting any other animal at the shelter. OHS will provide potential adopters with additional insight into these animals to make sure they are aware of any special needs the animals might have.

“We’re glad that our shelter can help another shelter out with a crisis like this,” said Susan Mentley, OHS director of shelter operations. “Many of these animals were part of breeding operation and they have never experienced being home with a family.”

In mid-April the Washington County Sheriff's Office removed 165 dogs, four birds and a pair of horses from the property of Gaston resident Carolyn Ohlhauser and charged her with animal neglect.
