The history of KGW (channel 8) television begins on December 15, 1956, when the station signed on as an ABC affiliate at its facility at 13th and Jefferson Streets in downtown Portland.  For the first thirty-six years of its existence, KGW was owned and operated by King Broadcasting, and during most of its history, the station was managed by Dorothy Bullitt. After Ms. Bullitt's death, her daughters carried on with the management of the station for a few years before selling to the Providence Journal Company.

KGW became an NBC affiliate in the early 1960's, and moved into its current facility a few years later.   In 1992, KGW was purchased by The Providence Journal Corp., and then by current owner,  Belo, in 1997.

Now known as Northwest NewsChannel 8, KGW's proud tradition is news. The top-rated news organization has won numerous awards for its journalistic excellence.

Our proud heritage of talent includes Today Show anchor Ann Curry and ABC consumer reporter John Stossel.  Currently, the KGW news team is anchored by Tracy Barry, Joe Donlon and Laural Porter.  The Chief Meteorologist is Matt Zaffino.
